English: Earth star (1) Earth stars (Geasters) are one of the stranger fungi. Related to puffballs and initially resembling them, the outer layer of the sphere, or exoperidium, then folds back on itself, splitting into several starfish-like arms in order to reveal and raise up a globular sac (endoperidium) containing the spores which are dispersed through the hole at the apex when buffeted by wind and rain. Sometimes the whole fungus itself catches the wind and is blown free.
There are several species of earth star some of which have an additional 'collar' around the spore sac, or different shape/number of arms. This one is probably the common Geastrum saccatum. |
