DeskripsyonSteamboat monkeyflower, Diplacus ovatus (34548560685).jpg |
Steamboat monkeyflower, Diplacus ovatus, Nevada, Sierra Nevada, Carson Range, Steamboat Creek - Truckee Meadows drainage, elevation 1405 m (4615 ft). This rare species is endemic to various soils in the Geiger Grade and Steamboat Hot Springs area of southern Washoe County, Nevada, southward to Carson City and the Carson Valley of Douglas County. Last year it was in mass bloom in many locations, including the siliceous sinter spring mound of Steamboat Hot Springs. Care must be used to distinguish this species from other members of the Diplacus nanus - Diplacus mephiticus group, especially toward the south end of its range. Here near the type locality the identity is more straightforward. Steamboat Hot Springs included active geysers and spring mound deposition up until the late 1980s when above-ground activity ceased. Although this was about the time that geothermal energy development started up near the site, prior regional groundwater drawdown in the south Reno area may have reduced the near-surface reservoir for geyser activity. Also visible in the image is the even rarer Steamboat buckwheat (Eriogonum ovalifolium var. williamsiae). |
