Betawiki update

Translatewiki.net update

  • Translatewiki.net formerly known as Betawiki is where the Internationalisation and Localisation of MediaWiki is concentrated. Over 300 languages are supported, issues with MediaWiki programs are dealt with. We need all the help we can get to ensure that we can maintain this service in the face of an increasing workload.
  • It can take a long time before your localised messages become available here on your wiki. The LocalisationUpdate extension will make messages available within two days. We hope that it will be operational in a months time.

Gumagamit: 203.111.235.50

Salamat. - The Wandering Traveler 13:37, 2 Abril 2009 (UTC)

Hi Wandering Traveler, thank you for notifying us here at cebwiki regarding this IP user edits and contribs. As I see it, so far, so good. The IP's contribs are copied directly from enwiki. Still, I'll watch over these TV station articles and others. :=) Jordz 04:05, 3 Abril 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Admins. Please look closely to the edits of this anon user. He clearly posts false information, especially to the Philippine TV network articles (among his edits claims that NBN owns all the radio stations of Eagle Broadcasting Corporation; DZEC, DWDM-FM, etc.). Hoping for your swift action. Thanks. -Danngarcia

Heavy vandalism on several Philippine TV related articles

Hi admins,

Haven't you noticed that this Wikipedia has been bombarded with vandalism in the past few months? Banned users from en.wiki and tl.wiki (User:Lianlaspinas, User:203.111.235.50, and others) have transferred here to make disruptive edits. Please take a look at this example. An anon user had replaced all the GMA's past logos with pictures of Kim Chiu, Charice Pempengco and logos of a Korean TV network. I have alerted an admin here last April regarding the vandalism but it seems that he did not take any actions with the vandals.

I wanted to help but I cannot speak Cebuano. Please, if you want to save the integrity of this wiki, take the necessary actions. Thanks. -Danngarcia

Hi Danngarcia. Thank you for notifying us - short reply: I'm kinda busy these days. If you have the time kindly remove those "heavy vandalism", they're written in English anyway. I will warn these users. Jordz 04:32, 15 Hunyo 2009 (UTC)[reply]

These editors/users are now blocked:

Under surveillance are users:

Hi Jordz, I finally created an account here to help in cleaning up. I think you should also block both User:Gabbyshoe and User:203.111.235.50. I have observed his edits on tl.wiki, en.wiki and here and most of them are hoaxes. He moved several Metro Manila TV station articles on their incorrect callsigns. User:203.111.235.50 on the other hand posts obvious hoax information here since he was blocked on both en.wiki and tl.wiki, as I earlier reported. I'll try my best to clean up the mess those vandals created here. Thanks!!! -Danngarcia 14:44, 26 Hunyo 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, these users are now blocked:

I will make a wikiproject on Philippine TV station articles. Thanks Danngarcia! Jordz 06:08, 2 Hulyo 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jordz, I would like to report the edits done by User:124.105.242.200. This user may be a sockpuppet of the blocked users above. Request to block a range of IP addresses

I would like to request for a range block for the IP addresses indicated here. While I understand that indefinite range blocks would not allowed, as per Block lengths, I would like to push for the longest possible duration that these blocks could be implemented for due to the sheer volume and incessant nature of the vandalism, which has already gone on for months. Given a situation like this we are in now, imposing a range block that would last for only a short while simply isn't going to work. --Pare Mo 08:08, 13 Septiyembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I will not pursue this because a lot of users that use those IP addresses will be prevented from editing. See meta:Help:Range_blocks. For the mean time, only individual IP addresses will be blocked. But after a week or two passes and those anon edits from these IP addresses persists, then indeed a rangeblock will be the last recourse. Jordz 05:39, 15 Septiyembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, bay. The plan seems to be working already. --Pare Mo 09:24, 15 Septiyembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Sir Jordz! We will keep on monitoring if that anon comes back again.
On a side note, may I request to delete the articles this anon created (including those who were blocked a few months ago) to discourage them in creating this kind of mess. Thanks again. -Danngarcia 01:32, 16 Septiyembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Translation of a short story

Hi my friend!

I would like to request something from you. Yes, translation. I hope, it's not a bad thing for you. Some years ago I wrote a (really) short story about a lonely man (actually symbolized the Saami nation). I translated into some languages and I thought, it would be great to have it more, like also in Cebuano :) I made this page, the English or Spanish translation is somewhere there. You can put the Cebuano translation there. Thank you again! Sorry for my disturb... :( - hu:User:Eino81

Small request

Hello! I am a Polish wikipedian and I would like to ask you for writing a new article about former Polish President who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 – Lech Wałęsa. I have looked for his article in your Wikipedia but without success. Polish Wikipedians will be grateful for your help. Thank you so much in advance! PS article in English you can find here. Best wishes from Poland, 188.33.87.97 19:54, 21 Septiyembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My Cebuano isn't all that good so I created a stub article that hopefully will grow over time. I also created the requisite categories. Both our countries--the Philippines and Poland--share a similar recent history in having had to suffer for decades under foreign-backed regimes, and eventually overthrowing them without bloodshed. Cheers to us! --Pare Mo 09:40, 22 Septiyembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

What this means for you

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.

Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

Why localise at translatewiki.net

When you localise at translatewiki.net, your messages will be used in all Wikimedia projects and eventually in all MediaWiki based projects. This is how we provide the standard support for your language. When messages change, at translatewiki.net you will be prompted to revisit your translations. Localising is more efficient because we have innovated the process to make you more efficient; there is text explaining about messages and we have applied AJAX technology to reduce the number of clicks you have to make.

Translatewiki.net update

How can we improve the usability for your language

We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly

The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues.

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Language issues. The issues you raise will all be assessed. It is important to keep each issue separate, because this will make it easier to understand the issues and find solutions.

Bad Book Spam warning

(My apologies for this message being in English) The vandal General Tojo is spamming Wikipedia by removing references and adding his books as the only reference. The books are nothing more than reprints of out of copyright sources, with spelling errors from the title page on forward (For example it is James McClymont, not MacClymont, and Gaspar Correia, not Correa, and Charles Edwards Lester, not Charles Lester Edwards). This article is one of his targets, please watch for removal of valid references and adding of the spam references by new users or IP's. The books spammed so far are:

  • Magellan (2008) by Francis Guillemard (died 1933), Antonio Pigafetta (died 1534), Francisco Albo (contemporary of Magellan), Gaspar Correa (contemporary of Magellan), Keith Bridgeman (Editor) and Tahira Arsham (Editor); ISBN 978-1-906421-00-7
  • Amerigo Vespucci (2009) by Charles Lester Edwards (died 1890), Amerigo Vespucci (died 1512), Keith Bridgeman (Editor) and Tahira Arsham (Editor); ISBN 978-1-906421-02-1
  • Pedro Cabral (2009) by James Roxburgh MacClymont (out of copyright author), William Brooks Greenlee (edited around 1939), Pero Vaz de Caminha (died 1500), Keith Bridgeman (Editor), and Tahira Arsham (Editor);ISBN 978-1-906421-01-4

Please watch for removal of valid references and replacement with spam, and revert accordingly. As for the identity of the spammer and vandal General Tojo:

  • Keith Bridgeman, London is the editor of all the books spammed by General Tojo
  • Keith Bridgeman, London is the owner of the publishing house publishing the books spammed by General Tojo
  • Keith Bridgeman, London is the owner of some Parkinson's disease patents spammed by General Tojo on Wikipedia for quite a few years now
  • Keith Bridgeman, London is also the owner of the web page advertising both the Parkinson stuff and the books spammed by General Tojo.

For details see en:Wikipedia:Long term abuse/General Tojo -- Chris 73 11:27, 3. Okt. 2009 (CEST)

Hey Chris, thanks for informing us about this. So far, it seems that none of our articles here have been affected. Either way, we'll be keeping watch. --Pare Mo 07:21, 5 Oktubre 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedya namespace?

On this wiki there are many pages starting with Wikipedya:. But that is article namespace not project namespace like this page. According to settings [1] only Project: and Wikipedia: are valid prefixes for this namespace. That is making trouble with interwiki bots because linking from article namespace to project namespace is not allowed.

So could you please move these pages to project namespace or make an request for adding Wikipedya as valid project namespace prefix on cebwiki at bugzilla:? Thx. Merlissimo 17:55, 13 Enero 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, we understand. They've all been moved to the Wikipedia: namespace for now. --Pare Mo 02:48, 14 Enero 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think adding a new namespacealias or even changing primary namespacename would also be a good idea, because according to your logo and main page that is your preferred spelling. But that must be a community decision. Thanks for moving these pages. Merlissimo 13:57, 14 Enero 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Thanks too for letting me know that the previous arrangement made it difficult for the interwiki bots. --Pare Mo 06:33, 15 Enero 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can we also have a page in Pilipino? I find it stange that there is a Cebuano page (and even a Chabacano de Zamboanga page) but not a Pilipino page. Don't we have enough Filipnos capable of translating the page to the country's official language?

There is no Pilipino wikipedia. Look for Tagalog wikipedia instead (http://tl.wikipedia.org). Fundraising and your wiki

Greetings, please translate this message if you can.

Fundraising 2010 is preparing to start, and we want your project to be a part of the global movement to support free knowledge. The Wikimedia Foundation is engaging with local communities that build the projects to play an active part in this year's fundraiser. This year we will be working to best serve all the language communities by providing messages that are best suited for each location.

To do this, we need your help. We are testing messages and we want to be sure that our messages will work with your language. If it does not and your community can come up with your own banner in the spirit of supporting free knowledge, we invite you to submit your proposals and be active in this process. Wikimedia is for you, join us in supporting free knowledge in your local community! Kpeterzell 04:58, 15 Septiyembre 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Beat Jimmy

Please translate this message.

The Fundraising Committee is issuing all interested community members a challenge: we want you to beat Jimmy. The appeal from Jimmy Wales and the corresponding banner have been tested head-to-head with other successful banners, and the results are clear: it's our best performing message... by a lot. This year we have a lofty fundraising goal; we need all of our banners to bring in donations like the Jimmy Appeal, but no one wants to keep the Jimmy banner up for two months. We want to run donor quotes, and other wonderful ideas, but we have to have banners that work as well as or better than the Jimmy appeal.

We've just released the highlights from a donor focus group, and the results of our donor survey. With one month to the launch of the fundraiser, the messages we test must be driven by data from our tests and surveys - we can no longer rely on instinct alone.

We've redesigned our fundraising meta pages with the Jimmy challenge; check out the survey results and propose/discuss banners that reflect these findings. Add the banners you think will 'beat Jimmy' here to be tested Tuesday October 12 against Jimmy. Kpeterzell 02:54, 8 Oktubre 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Call for image filter referendum

The Wikimedia Foundation, at the direction of the Board of Trustees, will be holding a vote to determine whether members of the community support the creation and usage of an opt-in personal image filter, which would allow readers to voluntarily screen particular types of images strictly for their own account.

Further details and educational materials will be available shortly. The referendum is scheduled for 12-27 August, 2011, and will be conducted on servers hosted by a neutral third party. Referendum details, officials, voting requirements, and supporting materials will be posted at Meta:Image filter referendum shortly.

Sorry for delivering you a message in English. Please help translate the pages on the referendum on Meta and join the translators mailing list.

Bot creation of articles about animals and plants

I am currently running a bot project to create wikipedia articles about all species of plants and animals. So far, all of it has been on Swedish wikipedia, with some 60,000+ articles created to date. Now I would like to expand the project to Cebuano wikipedia as well. There are two reasons I have picked cebwp:

  • Coverage of animals and plants is currently quite modest. This makes the project both more useful and easier.
  • Cebuano is my wife's native language, and I understand at least a bit of it (but not enough to write a proposal like this). I have access also to other native speakers, who will help me with the language.

The bot is not using machine translation at any stage, but is instead combining data from large taxonomic databases (mainly Catalogue of Life) with short (handwritten) text templates. A sample of Swedish bot-created articles, similar to the ones I propose to create on cebwp, can be found in sv:Kategori:Robotskapade artiklar 2012-12.

Is such a project of interest to the cebwp community? If so, I will proceed to produce a small sample of test artcles that you can look at. If those are approved, I would like to request a bot flag for Lsjbot:

  • Operator: Lsj
  • Function: Main function is article creation. Will also perform fixes and maintenance on the created articles.
  • Operation: runs are started manually, but once started a run can produce many articles without further user intervention.
  • Software: dotnetwikibot
  • Has bot flags on: svwp

While waiting for a response here, I'm doing some minor jobs with the bot at low speed, fixing categories and stuff. Lsj (talk) 21:15, 25 Disyembre 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A sample of bot-created articles can now be found in Kategoriya:Paghimo ni bot 2012-12. Comments welcome. Lsj (talk) 22:21, 28 Disyembre 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are now about 400 test articles. The first ones made had som grammar errors, but after feedback from a native speaker the most recent ones should be ok languagewise. Lsj (talk) 20:38, 30 Disyembre 2012 (UTC)[reply]
HI Lsj, bot flag for Lsjbot is now done. I will look up the grammar and syntax of the content and templates used soon. Thanks :) Jordz (talk) 09:27, 22 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
