English: Lanty's Tarn. Who was Lanty? Some say a smuggler and a distiller of fine whiskies. The only thing that is certain is that Lanty is a Lakeland diminutive for Lancelot. The tarn was dammed in the 19c, probably by the Marshall family of Patterdale Hall and there is an underground cellar below the dam which could have been used to store the ice off the tarn for use through the summer. I do find this hard to believe but I have seen similar ice houses in Mallorca so it must have been feasible. The ice would have been well insulated with sawdust. The current state of the tarn is low and may well be back to its pre-damming level.
