English: A female springtail of the Calvatomina rufescens species from Ebbor Gorge, Wookey, England.
Original description on Flickr:
This is a higher magnification stack of the previous upload from Ebbor Gorge as I thought the details might be quite cool. And the patterns on the hide are rather wonderful if you look at the biggest size... By the way- should just point out that these springtails are very tiny, this one being around 1mm big.
Frans Janssens says...
"Those "hairs on the back" are in fact thin hollow wax tubes produced by epidermal glands at a very high speed. You can actually see them grow ;-) The wax tubes break off easily. Such wax tubes are only found in 2 unrelated families: Dicyrtomidae and Neelidae."
