Our first visit to Wisley this year ... the Spring Fair is on this weekend. Delosperma is a genus of around 100 species of succulent plants in the family Aizoaceae. The family is common in southern and eastern Africa. Delosperma species, as do most Aizoaceae, have hygrochastic capsules, opening and closing with changes in humidity. Delosperma sphalmanthoides is the smallest species in the genus. is a high altitude alpine cushion plant from the mountains of the Winter rainfall area of South Africa. It is cold hardy. It is found in pockets of gravelly soil on a massive high altitude rock outcropping. It needs moisture all year round but definitely goes semi-dormant in summer. Formerly Delosperma was classified in the genus Mesembrianthemum in the family Mesembrianthemaceae. |
