Mount Dana sedge, Carex incurviformis, California, White Mountains, Sheep Mountain, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 3616 m (11865 ft). This inconspicuous little alpine sedge was only noticed in the White Mountains in the past few decades, and at this spot only in 2016, where it reaches its lowest(!) elevation limit in California. The rest of the White Mountains and nearby Sierra Nevada populations are found at around 3700-4000 meters (12,000-13,000 feet) elevation. These California populations are isolated and widely disjunct from the main range of the species, which extends from the central and northern Rocky Mountains northwest to Alaska, in moist arctic or alpine tundra settings between 1900 and 4400 meters (6200-14,500 feet) elevation. They were even given a separate name (Carex danaensis or Carex incurviformis var. danaensis) based on slight differences in flower scales, but those differences are now considered insignificant. Also visible in this image are leaves of alpine paintbrush (Castilleja nana) and alpine flames (Pyrrocoma apargioides). |
