Slender tufted grass to 50 cm tall (often much less). Leaf blades are 2-10 cm long, fine and hairy, with tufts of hairs either side of the ligule. Has a patchy distribution. Found on poorer, loamy or clay, skeletal soils in natural pastures and other open grassy areas. Native biodiversity. Of low importance for grazing as it is usually not abundant in pastures and has low production and quality.
Low growing and best suited for sheep grazing. Most growth is in spring, but produces green leaf year-round if there is adequate moisture. Persists and seeds prolifically unless very heavily and continuously grazed. Will tend to decline if the pasture is not grazed for a long period and allowed to grow tall.
