How do you create a bot?[usba ang wikitext]

Hi Lsj, I'm JinJian. Most of my edits are made in Waray-Waray Wikipedia and I'm an administrator there. In case you don't know, the Warays are in the islands just across the waters of Cebu to the northeast. Waray-waray and Cebuano have much in common than you probably would think.

How did you create your bot? Did you write the source code yourself? I wish to have a bot for creating some new articles, adding templates and for doing some repetitive tasks for the Waray-waray wikipedia. I would appreciate if you could help me on this. Thanks --JinJian (talk) 22:21, 1 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JinJian, good to hear from you. Yes, I know that Cebuano and Waray-Waray are closely related languages. Probably a botcode developed for Cebuano would be easily convertible to Waray-Waray.
There are several different ways of creating a bot, depending on what you want to do. The bot is basically a small computer program running on your computer. Inside the program, you call functions for accessing the wiki and doing the edits you want to do. Ready-made programs exist for simple standard tasks like replacing one word with another in the text, or moving articles in one category to another. For more complicated tasks, you need to write your own source code, like I do. I'm using a framework called DotNetWikiBot which can be downloaded here. How much programming experience do you have? DotNetWikiBot is written in C#, but should work with any programming language within Microsoft Visual Studio. I can send you a small example of source code to create articles, if you like. Lsj (talk) 22:43, 1 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a code example: sv:Wikipedia:Projekt DotNetWikiBot Framework/Lsjbot/CebuanoElements. It's the code I used yesterday to make articles about chemical elements. Lsj (talk) 22:58, 1 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the tip. I'm a graduating student of Diploma in computer science at UPOU. While I have some knowledge in programming, I'm not that proficient yet. I would appreciate if you could send me some source code. I'm going to study them and hopefully make my own bot in the future. You may email them at:jinjian0604@yahoo.com. Thank you again and Happy New Year :) --JinJian (talk) 00:02, 3 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just a random comment from a passer-by on this wiki[usba ang wikitext]

Hello, Lsj. I don't speak Cebuano or anything, but I saw you were running a bot here and were unhappy that you were receiving no comments on it. Personally, I think the content it has created looks good, but I haven't checked every page (just a few) and I don't speak the language. Has a Cebuano speaker (perhaps your wife) checked some of the pages? PiRSquared17 (talk) 05:33, 21 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments. Yes, both my wife and another native speaker have checked the language of the bot-created articles, so it should be ok. In parallel, I am also creating the same articles on svwp, in my own native language. Now I just hope to find somebody who can grant a bot flag to Lsjbot on cebwp - as you probably noticed, Recent Changes are totally flooded. Lsj (talk) 07:30, 21 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You could try m:SRB, but they'll want to see a discussion (on Wikipedia:Tubaan). I'd much rather have it with a bot flag if possible. PiRSquared17 (talk) 13:10, 21 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Another bot request was approved after a week with no objections: https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Steward_requests/Bot_status&oldid=5080308#Innocent_bot.40wikidata Do you think yours could be? PiRSquared17 (talk) 13:12, 21 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree this should really be done with a bot flag - that's why I applied for a flag more than a month ago. Cebwp does have a local bureaucrat, Gumagamit:Jordz, who is at least occasionally active, and who is aware of what I'm doing (see here). Hopefully Jordz can provide Lsjbot with a bot flag within the near future. Otherwise I might try on meta. But it's difficult to show them a discussion on Wikipedia:Tubaan when hardly anybody is active there... Lsj (talk) 13:45, 21 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Got bot flag now, thanx to Jordz. Lsj (talk) 08:28, 23 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings Lsj![usba ang wikitext]

Thanks for taking care of the spams, and although I dont speak Cebuano it looks like you and your bot are doing a terrific job creating those articles about species of plants and animals, again Greetings and well done!--Lam-ang (talk) 16:08, 23 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cebuano Wikipedia[usba ang wikitext]

Hi Lsj, thanks for helping Cebuano Wikipedia. I hope you may help this version get 100,000 articles and 42th place those got 100,000. Chers!--Aplikasi (talk) 14:29, 31 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your supportive message. I expect we will reach 100,000 on Feb 2 - I'm adding about 10,000 articles per day now, and will continue like that for quite a while. Lsj (talk) 14:40, 31 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations, you have made many articles. I target this version will get in 36th place in list of wikipedias on Feb 15.--Aplikasi (talk) 14:43, 31 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
How many articles that ceb wiki will had? In more 200K or 300K?--Aplikasi (talk) 14:49, 31 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well... I have about 1,000,000 articles in the pipeline. But it will likely take a year or so to add all of them, even at full bot speed. Lsj (talk) 15:00, 31 Enero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, you are the best because create many articles in these wikipedias, but likely about all pages except articles are very less especially talk pages, redirects, templates and so on. I recommend anyone who is fluent in the language to help create a site that is not a plan to allow more total non-article from the article. Thank you for helping this wikipedia. Greetings!--Aplikasi (talk) 14:25, 1 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As far as statistics is concerned, the bot creates about as many non-articles as articles. The most recent batch (annelid worms, ulod nga singsing) contained 14,000 articles, 2,000 categories, 7,000+ redirects, and 3,000 talk pages. But of course there is not much discussion on those talk pages, the bot uses the talk page of an article when something in the article requires a comment.
But apart from that, I fully agree that it would be great to have more humans cebuano speakers active here. I do think the bot activity actually helps a bit there, as I have noticed more human edits since I started running the bot at full speed. Possibly the massive influx of articles draws some attention? Lsj (talk) 14:52, 1 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe, but before these Waray-Waray,Buginese,Kazakh and Uzbek have already do like that but not many people at there, there are only a few active user. May I know how you do a bot at full speed?--Aplikasi (talk) 16:04, 1 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations because got 100,000 articles. I think you should be an administrator in this wikipedia version.--Aplikasi (talk) 13:51, 2 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I applied for administrator at Wikipedia:Mga hangyo nga mahimong tigdumala a few days ago, but no reaction there so far. Lsj (talk) 15:36, 2 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Concerning your earlier question about how I do my bot, you can find the botcode here and here. It's a C# program running with the DotNetWikiBot framework. "Full speed" refers to the maximum permitted speed for Wikipedia bots, around 10 edits per minute. Lsj (talk) 19:24, 2 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've just posted a note endorsing your application/self-nomination as one of the administrators. --Harvzs (talk) 22:18, 2 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations on your 100,000th article. Why don't you do the same for Waray wikipedia? I'm inviting you to do that. It only needs minor adjustment from that you have entered in Cebuano Wikipedia. For example: Gihulagway would probably be Ginhulagway in Waray-Waray; Ulod nga singsing is also ulod nga singsing in waray; Paghimo ni bot would be Paghimo han bot in Waray. I and Harvzs are both administrators there. --JinJian (talk) 02:04, 3 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I will be happy to do the same for Waray, if I can get help with translation. Especially the names of animals will need a bit of work. I will post a list of the translations needed. Lsj (talk) 06:28, 3 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for helping us. The Waray people would be grateful to you. Of course I can assist you with the translations. I also have a friend who is a Waray lexicographer and orthographer in case we need professional help. The official waray community email address given by the Wikimedia Philippines to us is waray@wikimedia.org.ph; I am handling that email address. You may also send the list of translations needed there. --JinJian (talk) 07:43, 3 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I mailed the translations needed to waray@wikimedia.org.ph. Will be great if we can get this species project running also on waray wikipedia. Lsj (talk) 09:23, 3 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Besides Cebuano and Waray-Waray, you may help us in Malay Wikipedia about living because there if only a few about living. I will post you the translation. I hope you may help Malay Wikipedia. Your contribution is very much appreciated in the Malay Wikipedia. Because I see the articles about living is very important to expose the reader about life so that they can know all kinds of marine life and can appreciate the marine life.--Aplikasi (talk) 06:06, 5 Pebrero 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be happy to help also in Malay. As I said above, I sent the files that need translation to JinJian for waray. If you can give me an email address (or send it to me with wikimail if you don't want to post it), I will mail the same files to you, with translation instructions. The bot code that is creating species articles is taking its input from a database containing only living species. Canariomys bravoi is not included. Possibly in the future I will rewrite the bot code to handle also extinct species, but that will take a while. Lsj (talk) 03:16, 22 Mayo 2013 (UTC)[reply]

False statistics[usba ang wikitext]

Hello! What sense is in bot-making of thousands poor and brief stubs? Who will read them? Besides those semi-stubs break official statistics. Thanks. --Bulakhovskyi (talk) 18:07, 10 Hulyo 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cebwp didn't even have "poor and brief stubs" before, even about a lot of common animals that people are likely to search for and read about. Which is better when somebody is searching for info about e.g. some bird that they have seen - to find a bot-made stub, with correct basic data, iw-links and sources, or to find nothing?
As for statistics, I don't really care. The purpose of Wikipedia is not to produce statistics. The purpose of Wikipedia is to create "a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge". I contribute to that purpose to the best of my ability. Lsj (talk) 20:26, 10 Hulyo 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bot for scowiki?[usba ang wikitext]

I see you have Lsjbot to create articles on this wiki and other wikis, I was wondering if you'd be able to set it up on scowiki also. What do you think? --AmaryllisGardener (talk) 14:30, 25 Enero 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It can be done, if there is consensus for it on scowiki, and if there is a native speaker who can help me translating some key phrases and animal/plant names. Lsj (talk) 15:29, 25 Enero 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I might start an RfC, so I might get back to you in about a month. --AmaryllisGardener (talk) 23:19, 25 Enero 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hej Lsj, I've found by chance this thread and, before that, this article: Apiwan Wiriyachai: "and died sa Philippines"? I corrected some other mistakes in 2 articles, but can't translate "and died" into Cebuano because of ceb-0. The articles of Pitpisit are really very small, is this normal here? Your bot's articles are longer, by the way. Gratulation to the second-biggest Wikipedia version now, I think that's mainly your bot's work, also in the third-biggest Wikipedia version, the Swedish one. Hälsningar --Bjarlin (talk) 01:44, 18 Enero 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am aware of Pitpisit (talk⧼dot-separator⧽contribs)'s activities. Mixed feelings - while the contributions are of low quality, I really do not want to discourage one of the few active editors on cebwp. I try to keep an eye on them instead, and improve them as time permits. Lsj (talk) 09:04, 18 Enero 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You are creating a big mess with creating these articles based on the geonames website - there are tons duplicated and wrong entries there, including totally misnamed ones. For example, the administrative centre of Amphoe Phunphin is not named Phunphin but Tha Kham - and adding names with "Amphoe" to the infobox of a town is total nonsense, as those only belong to the district. I have been trying to slowly add the administrative subdivisions of Thailand to Wikidata, which would have been the much better source for automatic articles - these mass-adding of unchecked data creates lot of unneccessary work. Ahoerstemeier (talk) 15:09, 31 Enero 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Have you found systematic errors specifically with the Thailand data in Geonames? If so, can you please clarify what the systematic problems are, preferably in form specific enough to do something about. If, for example, the "Amphoe" problem you refer to above is a general problem affecting many articles, it can be fixed easily enough. Lsj (talk) 20:14, 31 Enero 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Everything in the category "populated place" is a total mess. In Thailand, there are the following lower administrative units - subdistricts (Tambon, 3rd order subdivision, almost none tagged as such in geonames, 7256 units), administrative villages (Mu Ban, 4th order subdivision, names always starting with "Ban", around 75000, same names used many many times), and local governments (municipalities of different level, often sharing same boundary as a subdistrict, 7776 units). And administrative villages can cluster together more than one settlement, or a bigger settlement can be split into more than one administrative village. All these are munged together in this one category in geonames, some in the wrong category, some with a wrong name, often bogus data. One example of many - Ban Mai is the name of hundreds of administrative villages, the one created as article might refer to Mu 1 of Sathing Mo subdistrict, Singhanakhon district, Songkhla province. The whole subdistrict has a population of 17497, but according to geonames the village has a population of 86,000, maybe the population number of Singhanakhon district was wrongly imported to Ban Mai. It should also be noted that - even though far from being inactive - the Thai Wikipedia is still far from having all of the 3rd order subdivisions covered, let alone the lower ones.
While I personally believe mass-creating articles like this is nonsense, better to put the data in Wikidata and wait for an automatic article creator from the pure data - but if such articles are to be created, they should at least have some relation with reality. If you want my hand-curated lists of the administrative subdivisions of Thailand, they are in XML format at Github. Ahoerstemeier (talk) 14:37, 1 Pebrero 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I see the problem now, thank you for calling attention to it. The "populated place" category in Geonames indeed mostly consists of a lot of "Ban" places. I will remove from cebwp those Ban that have been made into articles (not so many, so far). But in order to make a clean sweep, I will let the bot finish the current run and then do cleanup afterwards. I had a quick look at your xml files, they look like a very valuable source for future work. Lsj (talk) 16:27, 1 Pebrero 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, now I have deleted all the "Ban" places that were incorrectly created as populated places. Not that many in cebwiki, actually - while there are indeed a lot in GeoNames, the bot does not blindly copy everything in GeoNames. Will look at the other issues later. Lsj (talk) 20:29, 2 Pebrero 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. When you get to create articles on the Tambon or other units from my XML files, feel free to ask me before (preferred by email) to avoid any misconceptions, as well as to connect those articles with Wikidata in easiest way as I am slowly adding them there with my own bot. Ahoerstemeier (talk) 14:19, 6 Pebrero 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I would like to add the following sentence in Swedish to the Swedish article about Liv and Maddie: In Scandinavia the series was first shown on December 20, 2013 as a sneak peak and later officially premiered on January 24, 2014. Also, I looked and it looks like Playhouse Disney Channel Asia was a legitimate article that didn't need to be deleted. Meanwhile, there are pages histories of iCarly, Teletubbies, Victorious, The Fox and the Hound, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Charlotte's Web that should be restored as well. 104.58.147.208 17:20, 22 Pebrero 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any reason for this? If there's none, we should probably delete the County article. --Bentong Isles (talk) 05:56, 16 Marso 2017 (UTC)[reply]

European communes[usba ang wikitext]

Hi, I met the work of your bot in Switzerland and Belgium. Creating stubs is a good thing but it should be done more carefully. "Arrondissement" (districts) are called municipyo which is obviously a commune, some names are totally moronic (why not even go further to Place, Canton of the place, District of the place, Department of the place, Region of the place, Country, Europe, Ancient World, Earth, Solar System, Milky Way, 50.00, 45.00)??? When there is homonymy, the names have to be easy as possible and putting several administrative divisions plus coordonates is a total non sense. Also, for every place, you created three articles, one for the homonymy, one for the commune and one for the village head of the commune. It's another nonsense, just creating more homonymies with a content that should be exactly the same as communes are the basic level and no official data give more precise informations. Programming carefully would have taken you just a few minutes but now, we have for months to correct all this mess that gives a bad image of the whole ceb:wp. Have a nice day. Birdie (talk) 10:37, 20 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If you desire a constructive discussion about design choices in the bot code and what to do about choices you disagree with, please refrain from using words like "moronic" or "nonsense". Lsj (talk) 13:12, 20 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I can't find any word linked to intelligence concerning a title such as Neufchâteau (parokya sa Belhika, Wallonia, Province du Luxembourg, lat 49,84, long 5,43). I'll be very glad if you prove me the contrary, I swear. I understand it's robot's work but robots need supervision or they do stupid things as they've no common sense of their own. Let's be clear, I never saw titles so far from Article titles should be recognizable, concise, natural, precise, and consistent (Wikipedia:Article titles). If you disagree with this, then I'll understand why people have fun of ceb:wp, which is very sad as it doesn't encourage people to improve it. Birdie (talk) 15:02, 20 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I repeat: If you desire a constructive discussion about design choices in the bot code and what to do about choices you disagree with, please refrain from insults. You are in violation of WP:Civility. Lsj (talk) 17:57, 20 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You're funny at least. First, these are not insults, second, they're concerning the awful (I keep my opinion as you didn't answer to my request) "work" of a bot which has no feelings so I don't see any link to wp:Civility. Was lsjbot hurt? I'm soooo sorry, please cuddle it a little, I didn't mean to be mean to it. Visibly, you prefer to be famous for flooding wp than for doing any constructive work. I'm happy for you that you're satisfied with these productions that brought you "celebrity". Everyone finds his pride where he can so it's ok for me. Birdie (talk) 18:42, 20 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Correct diacritics[usba ang wikitext]

Hi Lsj. Can you put your bot to fix some Romanian diacritics in bot-created articles (in titles, text and categories)?

  • ã -> ă (Ă)
  • ş Ş -> ș Ș
  • ţ Ţ -> ț Ț

For more details see en:Romanian alphabet#Comma-below (ș and ț) versus cedilla (ş and ţ).

Examples of articles to be corrected: Municipiul Bãileşti, Municipiul Orãştie. --XXN (talk) 13:01, 20 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can be done. Is this universal so that all cedillas etc should be replaced in all articles about Romania, or are there exceptions? Does it affect other countries than Romania? Moldova? Lsj (talk) 13:11, 20 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this should be done in all articles about Romania, and Moldova also. Only for these countries; if the bot will go also outside the Robotskapade categories take care to not touch Turkish proper nouns (in Turkish "Ş, ş" is the correct letter). For Moldova I've corrected by hand most of titles, in the article text maybe I ommited some occurences. I've done also few corrections on Geonames, but there is a lot of work to be done and they will need a bot as well. --XXN (talk) 14:11, 20 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will fix this as soon as I finish an ongoing bot run correcting another error. Should be straightforward enough, except in cases where article name changes will clash with existing articles. Lsj (talk) 14:15, 20 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Running now. Will take a day or two. Does it look ok? Lsj (talk) 20:37, 20 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, all done now in Romania. Lsj (talk) 16:27, 22 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]

... and done in Moldova. Lsj (talk) 15:56, 25 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Looks ok. --XXN (talk) 11:59, 27 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Is your bot OK for creating articles?

For specific types of articles, yes. BTW, it would be helpful if you would sign your questions here by adding ~~~~ at the end. Lsj (talk) 07:26, 21 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Adding blue text[usba ang wikitext]

Can you add my new Film and TV articles that replace from the red text to blue text?

In order to make the red text blue, you need to write (or translate) the articles that the red text links to. Here is a list of the most common red texts. It might be a good idea if you try to translate some of these. Lsj (talk) 15:18, 30 Abril 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Arab-Israeli conflict[usba ang wikitext]

Can you protect many articles as part of the Arab-Israeli conflict?

I have not noticed any vandalism here connected with this conflict. Lsj (talk) 15:41, 29 Mayo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Lsj, I'd recommend you to protect the Geobox and other highly used templates. Some of the local templates might need improvements, but anyway, at a such usage scale it's better to protect them in order to prevent vandalism and other unwanted changes, which will affect a lot of articles. BTW, among the needed improvements, probably the most necessary thing is making templates get some missing data (in local infoboxes) from Wikidata, for example at least images (P18). --XXN (talk) 01:24, 29 Mayo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. Thank you for pointing out this vulnerability. I will fix it. Lsj (talk) 15:39, 29 Mayo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, running the bot now to protect these templates. Will do all that are used on more than 100,000 pages. Lsj (talk) 20:35, 4 Hunyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I added to Geobox and Taxobox functions to get images from Wikidata if here does not exist one (showase: Rîbnița (lungsod)). --XXN (talk) 21:41, 4 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

More articles in every language[usba ang wikitext]

Duplicated disambiguations[usba ang wikitext]

@Lsj, at the moment there are some 400+ duplicated disambiguations pages, detected by such a pattern: "page_title" = "page_title_(pagklaro)" and/or = "page_title_(pagklaro_2)", and all of them being in category "Pagklaro_paghimo_ni_bot", thus are bot-created. Many of them appeared as duplicates after mass renaming pages in order to correct mispelled names with wrong diacritics. Example pages: Borșa_(pagklaro) & Borșa (pagklaro 2). Could you write a script to merge automatically such duplicated disambigs (now I'm talking aonly about these bot-created)? Since they are bot-made, it should be relatively easy to this without major issues; perhaps the only problem is eventually keeping two entries about the same place in the resulting merged page content, but with a proper algorithm, this coould be excluded as well. --XXN (talk) 17:12, 31 Mayo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I will have a look. If they are exact duplicates, no problem, the bot can merge them. If not exact duplicates, it will be trickier. Lsj (talk) 18:00, 31 Mayo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Another series, smaller and easier to resolve: here you can see several tens of disambiguations with such patterns "Condado de (.*)" (in Spannish) and "Comté de (.*)" (in French) for American (U.S.) counties, for which already exists disambiguations in the official (English) language. I think these duplicated disambigs are unnecessary and should be redirected to the pages with English titles. E.g. Comté de Halifax & Condado de HalifaxHalifax County. Any objections, what do you think? XXN (talk) 12:24, 26 Hunyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
BTW (unrelated to the subject of this thread), take a look at this article, there is an error at "Halifax County may sa mosunod nga mga subdibisyon:[...]". XXN (talk) 12:24, 26 Hunyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, that's a weird bug in Halifax County. And I can see that it occurs in several other articles as well. Will have to investigate... No objection to merging the duplicate disambigs. Lsj (talk) 16:41, 3 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The error in Halifax County (and a bunch of other articles) is fixed now, though I will need to do another round of cleanup after the current bot run finished. Lsj (talk) 11:46, 10 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bangued and Bangued, Abra refer to the same municipality. Your bot created a page for Bangued, not realizing that this already exists at Bangued, Abra. —Seav (talk) 15:57, 3 Hunyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, done. Lsj (talk) 19:56, 3 Hunyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! —Seav (talk) 02:42, 4 Hunyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. The problem seems to be more extensive than it seems. See for example Lal-lo, Cagayan and Lal-lo, which refer to the same municipality. Same with Binangonan, Rizal and Binangonan (munisipyo). I am guessing that municipalities all already previously exist under the title "<municipality name>, <province name>" and your bot created articles for the same municipality under the name "<municipality name>" or "<municipality name> (munisipyo)". —Seav (talk) 02:48, 4 Hunyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this may be a general problem. The bot will check for existing articles by name but requires also that the coordinates match -- there are too many places in the world that have the same name. But since the existing municipality articles generally do not have coordinates, they will not have been detected. Lsj (talk) 16:29, 3 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Could you import the Mediawiki:Edittools from enwiki in order to make it easier editing (in wikistyle) on this project? I could enable such a feature just for me via an userscript, but since other users would want also to benefit from it, to not act in an egoistical way I leave here this suggestion ;) --XXN (talk) 12:41, 26 Hunyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

Can you please merge Bratslav (lungsod sa Ukranya) and Bratslav? These articles are about the same populated place: the former is more detailed and written by your bot, the latter is older, has the correct name and is connected to Wikidata. Thanks — NickK (talk) 15:32, 3 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Lsj (talk) 16:44, 3 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

False tundras near the borderlines between land and see[usba ang wikitext]

Hi Lsj, don't know if you follow the discussions on svwp, but it has recently been discovered that the climate classification algorithm used by Lsjbot has resulted in that a number of places have been incorrectly classified as having a "tundra climate". I made an overview showing the coordinates of all 31 609 "tundra places" in svwp showing that besides the expected places, like in Canada, a large number of places just at the border between land and see, all around the globe, have been described as having "tundra climate". I just made the same overview for the 66 669 places in cebwp and you can see the result on this map. Something seems to be wrong in the interpretation of the NASA temperature files for places near the land/see border.

Can you say if this "algorithm problem" is limited to the "Tundraklimat" or if it is a general problem that could also have affected other climate types. --Larske (talk) 06:21, 11 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lsj (talk) 17:31, 14 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
[translated to en: Even though I have left svwp. so I still understand Swedish :) I do not follow the discussions on svwp anymore, but I notice if somebody pings me.
I have looked at a handful of the weird tundrays, such as Pulau Purup, a tropical island off New Guinea. According to NASA's data, they all have an annual melting temperature of 0 degrees, which is certainly a tundra climate, but it is unreasonable in that situation. Apparently, NASA's data for certain sites may be that their way of measuring land temperature does not work right at the beach. Outside the ocean, NASA gives no value, but I assumed that when giving values, it's something sensible.
If NASA consistently delivers 0 degrees as temperature when it gets wrong, then all the errors should be found among the tundra. -Lsj (talk) 17:31, 14 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)]
--Larske (talk) 19:37, 16 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
[translated to en: Thanks for the reply! (That I wrote in English was because I did not know if it was ok to write in Swedish on cebwp, but that's apparently).
What temperature file is that used by Lsjbot? The reference only leads to this index page and there is a lot to choose from, but nothing with "Annual average temperature" as far as I can see. You can choose "Land surface temperature (day)" or "Land surface temperature (night)" and then choose a specific day, 8-day or month for different years, but I can not find data for "annual average temperature". :Thank you for some information on the NASA site. --Larske (talk) 19:37, 16 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)]
Varken svenska eller engelska är ju för all del "hemmaspråk" på cebwp. På den lokala motsvarigheten till Bybrunnen vore svenska olämpligt, men på min diskussionssida spelar det ingen roll. [translated to en: Neither Swedish nor English is, in any case, "home language" on the cebwp. On the local equivalent of Bybrunnen, Sweden would be inappropriate, but on my discussion page it does not matter.]
Dataset: [3], [4], [5], [6]. Lsj (talk) 10:18, 17 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
[translated to en: No, I did not find any complete dataset with annual average temperature. The annual average temperature is instead calculated by taking Land Surface Temperature (day) and "(Night)" per month for a certain year (2015), subtracting the corresponding Temperature Anomaly to obtain a long-term average monthly value, and then taking average over the year's 12 months. -- Lsj (talks) 10:18, 17 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)]

I have now removed (hopefully) all those fake tundras, plus a bunch that were tundra in the source but where local climate clearly differs (typically deep valleys in alpine regions). In total, about 13,000 articles got their tundra status revoked. Lsj (talk) 20:21, 23 Oktubre 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Strange name, shouldn't it be da:Nørrejyske Ø?

Hello there. We have noticed that Template:climate chart needs some fixes. There are more info and instructions at mw:/Parsing/Replacing_Tidy/FAQ#Delete_OR_fix_badly_nested_tables. (We are communicating often around such changes in Tech News and mailing lists, I don't know how much info reaches users at this wiki though.) Hope this helps, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 08:35, 20 Hulyo 2017 (UTC) PS: the description of https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T161341 looks relevant. The status of the task does /not/ mean the problem is fixed, it means information was provided around how to do it.[reply]

Thank you for the notification. The template at issue is copied from enwp, so presumably the same issue should arise there. I will look into possible fixes when I return from vacation in early August. Right before going away, I don't want to mess around with a template used in a million articles. Lsj (talk) 12:06, 20 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Overtaking[usba ang wikitext]

Do you plan to overtake english wikipedia?--KHMELNYTSKYIA (talk) 19:05, 22 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Overtaking enwp is not a goal in itself for me. The current project is nearing completion, with perhaps half a million articles remaining. That will bring the total up close to the enwp number. Lsj (talk) 07:38, 29 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Let me also ask. As for your opinion what's the future of Cebuano Wikipedia. And what induces you to create articles. --KHMELNYTSKYIA (talk) 13:13, 24 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well... easier to answer the second question first. What induces me to create articles is really the Wikipedia vision - making the sum of all human knowledge available to all people. Bot creation of articles is the most efficient method for me to contribute to that goal. It is also a much less biased method than hand creation of articles. There is substantial bias in Wikipedia coverage, reflecting the preponderance of young male western nerds among wikipedia contributors. I wish to level the playing field with the bot.
Concerning Cebuano wikipedia... Cebuano is a major language for spoken discourse, with more speakers than e.g. Dutch or Greek, but there is a regrettable lack of written sources of knowledge. There is no other encyclopedia in Cebuano, to my knowledge. At the same time, Cebuano and other local languages are recently being promoted as languages of instruction in schools in the Cebuano-speaking region. I want Cebuano-speaking students to be able find information in their own language, and encourage their literacy in Cebuano. Hopefully this will encourage young people to continue writing in cebuano, and contributing to Cebuano wikipedia. Lsj (talk) 16:43, 25 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Interconnecting categories[usba ang wikitext]

Could you interconnect ceb & sv bot-created categories ("robotskapade per country", "%entity% per region", etc.)? I succeeded to automatically match & connect in WD only those dated, + few other manually. --XXN (talk) 00:44, 30 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I can do that. Will take a bit of time, though, as I have to write new bot code to do it. I will do it by inserting oldfashioned interwiki links in the cebwp categories. Lsj (talk) 07:44, 30 Hulyo 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ask for merging[usba ang wikitext]

Hi,

How can I propose fora merge of the following articles Aber Ildut (suba) and Aber Ildut (bokana) (and maybe Aber Ildut). Well, maybe, it's not exactly a merge, maybe only renaming but there is definitely a confusion here between the Ildut (the river) and the Aber Ildut (the estuary of the river), which are basically the same (I'm not sure there is a need for two articles here).

Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 11:21, 4 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You can insert the template {{merge}} in the articles. Or you can just go ahead and merge the articles, in this case it looks uncontroversial. Lsj (talk) 11:25, 4 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've put the template (and on Aber Vrac'h/Estuaire de L'Aberwrac'h). BTW, something seems to be wrong in the link formatting. Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 15:39, 4 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]

~Myanmar‎[usba ang wikitext]

Hi. Pay some attention to the situation regarding Myanmar‎. In the recent changes I see that today an user redirected the long-standing Kategoriya:Myanmar to the ~recent bot-made Kategoriya:Burma. The main article about contry (a stub) is named Birmanya and it doesn't mention at all the form "Burma". The bot used widely "Burma" as name for this country and there are some problems: see for example Lashio District - in infobox the link labelled "Burma" with flagicon points correctly to article about country, but in the first sentence it points to Burmā, as the page Burma currently is a redirect to Burmā. If in Cebuano "Burma" is an accepted variant for Myanmar/Birmanya, this should be stated explicitly in the article about country and the page Burma must be redirected to that article, otherwise, it might be necessary to mass-replace in bot-created articles the term "Burma" with Myanmar/Birmanya. Also the categories tree should be adjusted after the country's article name. Regards. --XXN (talk) 12:13, 7 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I hadn't noticed. Will fix it. Seems the name will have to be replaced in all the articles about that country. I believe Birmanya will be the best choice, both because it is used in Cebuano, and because it sidesteps the politics involved in the choice between Burma and Myanmar. Lsj (talk) 19:40, 7 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Lsj (talk) 16:42, 8 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You really need to be more discriminating of items from Geonames[usba ang wikitext]

Or you end up creating silly and redundant articles like this: Philippine Islands (kapuloan). —Seav (talk) 19:06, 25 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Would it be possible to stop your bot? It is creating duplicates by the thousands and we can't cope with them on Wikidata. I would even go as far as saying that we now have a second Earth to deal with because of the numerous items generated by this bot. Therefore, we need a stop, a symbolic relief of about two years that will let us get rid of all the problems it has generated. Can you consider this? With my best respects for trying your best. Thierry Caro (talk) 21:48, 25 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]

+1. As I've mentioned above on this talk page, there are a lot of duplicates even here on the Cebuano Wikipedia. I've been merging Wikipedia articles and Wikidata items. —Seav (talk) 07:40, 26 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The bot project is currently on the last stretch, something like 98% finished. I will stop the bot as soon as the project is complete.
Meanwhile, you might consider pausing whatever other bot is transferring info from cebwp to Wikidata. My bot is not doing any edits at all on Wikidata. Lsj (talk) 08:42, 26 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that if you're almost finished it would be frustrating to stop it right now, a few thousands items short of completeness. Whatever, we have to do something, possibly together, to solve the problems created. Thierry Caro (talk) 17:56, 27 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The main bot run is finished now. Some cleanup remains to do, but I'm not going to add new articles in significant numbers any time soon. Lsj (talk) 07:49, 30 Septiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong content for Uni Mannheim[usba ang wikitext]

The content of the page https://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uni_Mannheim is the same as the page https://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannheim_(kapital_sa_distrito) except for the first sentence. AFAS you are not describing the university but the city, which then leads to another Wikidata conflict. Can you please delete the page https://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uni_Mannheim ? If you are interested University of Mannheim, then I suggest to start with the correct Wikidata page for it: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q317070 --Zuphilip (talk) 09:13, 26 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No, they are not the same. One article is about a city, the other about a university located in that city. But since the location is basically the same, descriptions of terrain and climate and such will be basically the same. I have merged the duplicate wd items. Translation of WMF's vision to Cebuano[usba ang wikitext]

Hi Lsj, I know that you only have basic knowledge of the Cebuano language but you are the most active user in this wiki. Could you make a translation of the WMF's vision into Cebuano? If you cannot, could you point me to persons who could? Here's the WMF's vision:

Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That's our commitment.

Thanks in advance. --Jojit fb (talk) 02:49, 31 Agosto 2017 (UTC)[reply]

But how do I verify that an attempted fix actually fixes the problem? Specifically, does this edit do the job? I'd like to know before I change a few million articles. Lsj (talk) 10:47, 9 Septiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The bot is running now with that change. But it will take a while to go through 4 million articles... Lsj (talk) 20:23, 23 Oktubre 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again: I think you have found mw:Parsing/Replacing_Tidy/FAQ#Delete_OR_fix_badly_nested_tables by now :) Please keep pinging us so we're in the loop! Are there more clarifications that you may need? User:SSastry (WMF), can you answer his question above? Thanks! --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 15:23, 15 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]
What I need now is just confirmation that the edits the bot is doing now (e.g. this) are actually fixing the problem. And if they don't, I may need some help in figuring out what needs changing. Looking forward to feedback from either of you, @Elitre (WMF): or @SSastry (WMF):. Lsj (talk) 15:36, 15 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]
?action=parsermigration-edit is your friend :-) ... https://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bur-Naf?action=parsermigration-edit shows that the problem is fixed since it looks the same with Tidy and with Remex SSastry (WMF) (talk) 15:58, 15 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Now I will just let the bot proceed with fixing all the articles. Will take some months at normal bot speed. Lsj (talk) 16:51, 15 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lsj, I'm trying to make contact with you through your talk page. I need your bot to do a small clean-up on Kategoriya:Limpopo River (suba sa Habagatang Aprika, lat -25,20, long 33,53) tubig-saluran entries to be moved to my renamed Kategoriya:Limpopo River tubig-saluran in +/- 2500 South African river articles that your busy Lsjbot created last July.

Please let know if poss, I will give more detail following your kind reply. Have a super day! (I'm Gert, residing in South Africa) --Aliwal2012 (talk) 13:35, 26 Septiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I have already noticed the need for this cleanup. I've been waiting for you to finish working on the South African rivers before doing it; I will get started now as soon as I get home at the end of the week. Thank you for your efforts in cleaning up among the botmade articles! Lsj (talk) 13:52, 26 Septiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a stack! Glad to hear from you across 3 oceans! Wonderful what the "net" can offer, wish we were born having it, eh? Regards to all, --Aliwal2012 (talk) 14:41, 26 Septiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Good to hear from you too! The bot is now at work moving the Limpopo articles, will take a couple of hours before it's done. Lsj (talk) 07:51, 30 Septiyembre 2017
... and now it's done. Lsj (talk) 15:14, 30 Septiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Improving Lsjbot create article in cebwp[usba ang wikitext]

Lsj am I correct to assume that your bot is capable of editting all Lsjbot articles in cebwp if we can point out to you where changes has to be made? -- Josefwintzent Libot Josefwintzent Libot (talk) 00:01, 7 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this is correct. If the same change needs to be made in many articles, the bot can do it. This is what the bot is currently doing. But editing millions of articles takes a long time even for a bot. Lsj (talk) 06:42, 7 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Good, I will then give you grammatically correct pattern for each article types. Meaning one pattern for rivers, another for plants, etc. Is that okay for you? --Josefwintzent
That will be great! Lsj (talk) 13:20, 8 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Another thing, in the Fb groupchat we have talk with a representative of Wikimedia.ph. She said that Europeans and Americans do not like that we deploy bots even in pattern articles. But I personally would want that we grammatically correct those bot created articles first to entice native speakers to expand those articles. The coherence of the articles as of now November 2017 is quite low. When coherence is improved more native speakers will start editing them. --Josefwintzent

Good evening there @Lsjbot:. I am thinking if it is possible to link a term into a database to autocorrect itself everytime everytime the the database is updated. This is possible in ms excel. In this manner editing will be easier as only the database has to be corrected. --Josefwintzent(talk)

It is possible to do this with Wikidata. But it requires some rather complicated template programming to do it on a large scale. The plantilya:Infobox tawo WD does what you are asking for, in articles about people. Lsj (talk) 11:43, 9 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bot-generated content.[usba ang wikitext]

Currently there's a discussion on Meta and many people are discussing your bot-generated content, do you or let your Cebuana wife proofread it? Is there some sort of quality control? I am honestly fascinated by the fact that so many articles here are automatically generated, what translation machine do you use, how does the entire process go?

Sent from my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL with Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile 📱. --Donald Trung (talk) 17:00, 10 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The recent informally formed Cebwiki Editing Clique are doing something now about the grammatical quality of these bot generate articles in collaboration with Lsjbot through FB group chat. This activity has been running for a week already. Our recent action is on those climate paragraphs first. Josefwintzent Libot (talk) 18:41, 10 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Lsjbot does not use any machine translation at all. The text is generated using handwritten templates for the different phrases in an article, which are then filled in with article-specific details and joined into an article by the bot. The templates were proofread by my wife, and I also consulted other native speakers, and I had her look at examples of complete articles. I proofread myself a sample of the finished articles, a large fraction in the beginning and less so as the processing becomes routine, to check so that they are composed correctly, but I will not catch subtle grammar errors. I also asked for feedback at Wikipedia:Tubaan.
I must confess that I am a bit disappointed that it took several years for people to notice the grammar issues that have been discussed recently. I was told at the start that the articles looked fine. Lsj (talk) 20:17, 10 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Lsjbot, I have added some formatting to improve the looks of the article. You can check the link in the FB groupchat. I hope you will like it. Josefwintzent Libot (talk) 05:43, 11 Nobiyembre 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bikol Wikipedia[usba ang wikitext]

Hi Lsj. May I request your bot to add contents there on flora and fauna. Thanks! --Filipinayzd (talk) 06:17, 21 Enero 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I could do that, but it requires a fair bit of preparations and help from native speakers. You might recall from when we talked about this a few years ago that I mailed you a bunch of files that need to be translated into the target language. Do you still have those, or should I send them again? How large a project are we talking about? All flora and fauna, or just some subset? Is there community consensus for this on bcl-wp? Duplicate German city articles[usba ang wikitext]

Hi Lsj,

Your bot made many duplicate articles about German cities. It seems that every time a city has separate functions (as a national/state/district capital, as its own district, as a municipality, etc.), Lsjbot thought that each function was a separate city and created a separate article for each one. An example of this would be Kiel (kapital sa estado pederal), Kreisfreie Stadt Kiel, and Kiel (munisipyo).

I already fixed one of these with Norderstedt, in which I transferred the text of Norderstedt (lungsod) to the disambiguation page Norderstedt, but the population figure in that article was outdated, so I replaced it with the population figure from Norderstedt (munisipyo) and the citation from said article. However, in doing so, I broke one of the other references (it says, "Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; no text was provided for refs named gn2862026). Do you know what happened there, and how to fix this ?

(Note: I changed Norderstedt (lungsod) and Norderstedt (munisipyo) to redirects, so check the revision history)

Thanks, DraconicDark (talk) 15:48, 25 Enero 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As I see it, these articles are not duplicates. Cities as en:human settlements are something else than administrative units, and should not be confounded in the same articles. Likewise, administrative units at different levels should not be confounded. To give an example of how this can be done outside cebwp: en:Stockholm, en:Stockholm urban area, en:Stockholm Municipality, and en:Stockholm County are correctly four separate articles for what you might call the city of Stockholm.
Concerning Norderstedt, you removed a reference from the reference list that is still used in the article. The original population ref was source also for other statements in the article. Lsj (talk) 17:25, 25 Enero 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What I'm referring to are, however, not separate administrative units. The city of Norderstedt, for example, is the same as the municipality of Norderstedt, so those articles are duplicates, since they contained literally the same information, but one had a more updated population figure.

In my example of Kiel, the city of Kiel is a city that is the capital of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, and is also its own district, separate from other districts, but the city, the district, and the capital are the same thing administratively ("Kreisfreie Stadt" simply means the city is not part of a district). This is not the same as, say, Landkreis Goslar, where the city of Goslar is the capital of the district Goslar, as in your example with Stockholm being the capital of Stockholm County.

This duplication issue, however, isn't limited to German cities. I just found that Lsjbot duplicated Italian cities too. For example, if you look in Bologna, you will find three articles for Bologna: Provincia di Bologna, Bologne (kapital sa rehiyon), and Bolonia (munisipyo). The first one is about the province of Bologna, of which the city is the capital. The last two are duplicates: Bologna the capital is the same as Bologna the municipality.

In the future, when merging duplicates like these, what do I do to prevent references from breaking again?

Thanks, DraconicDark (talk) 22:49, 25 Enero 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I believe we are mixing two separate issues here:
  • Places where two different administrative levels coincide, as with Kreisfreie Stadt Kiel, and Kiel (munisipyo). If I understand you correctly, in the German system the administrative entity Kiel functions both as a district (kreis) and as a municipality. If so, you are correct that these should be merged. But I believe those are a minority of what you call duplicates, mostly a modest number of major cities.
  • Places where a human settlement (cebuano "lungsod") and an administrative unit have the same name and roughly the same extent. Here I do wish to make a distinction between human settlements, which are defined by actual houses on the ground regardless of legalities, and administrative units, which are defined by a legal decree and a map, regardless of facts on the ground. These are two distinct kinds of entities, and even when the areas roughly coincide, as they often do in some countries, they should be kept distinct. Even in your example Kiel, looking at a map I can see that the administrative borders do not exactly follow the edges of the built-up area. Therefore, articles like the two Norderstedts, or Bologna the capital and Bologna the municipality, should, in my opinion, not be regarded as duplicates. This will include the majority of the cases that you regard as duplicates.
Lsj (talk) 12:10, 26 Enero 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Concerning references, there will be one with the name "gnXXXX" in every bot article about geography, with different number XXXX for each article. This refers to the main source that the bot used, and will typically be referred to several times in each article. Before removing this or any other named reference from the reference list, make sure there is no reference to the same name (<ref name = "gnXXXX"/>) anywhere in the text of the article. When merging, it may be proper to put both "gnXXXX" references in the first paragraph (and in the reference list), to show that the article refers to two distinct Geonames items. Lsj (talk) 12:26, 26 Enero 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I called those articles duplicates because the English, German and other Wikipedias do not regard settled area and legal municipality as distinct. Concerning the "built-up areas," out of curiosity, if those areas happen to be outside the legal boundaries of the municipality, wouldn't that mean they belong to a different municipality? I know that in the U.S., there are unincorporated areas that, for mailing purposes, have addresses of the city they are just outside (e.g. Paradise, Nevada, which most people think of as part of Las Vegas), but in Germany, there are very few unincorporated areas (which are known as "Gemeindefreie Gebiete" and are uninhabited and/or military training areas).

A separate issue: Three German cities (namely Berlin, Hamburg, and Bremen) are also their own federal states. The city, district, and state are all the same in those examples (although Bremen the state is actually two cities, Bremen and Bremerhaven, but they are both within the district and state Bremen). There is a duplication issue with those. In the article Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, which describes Hamburg as a state, it lists the quarters of Hamburg as if they were separate cities. The article on the city of Hamburg describes Hamburg as the "capital of the state of Hamburg" even though Hamburg is the only city in the state of Hamburg. What would I do here to merge the duplicates?

Sorry if this response is a bit rambling.

Indus River question[usba ang wikitext]

Cebuano Wikipedia has two articles on the Indus River, which are Indus River (suba) and Indus River (dagayday). From my extremely limited understanding of Cebuano, the first one seems to be about the Indus River in China, while the second seems to be about the Indus River in Pakistan. What would I do here to merge the duplicates? DraconicDark (talk) 01:32, 3 Pebrero 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, these are duplicates. I have merged them, together with Indus which was a third duplicate. This is a fairly common occurrence for long rivers, that the source Geonames has duplicate entries for a river in each country (or even each province) that it passes through. Difficult for a bot to distinguish these from the also common case with multiple rivers having the same name. Lsj (talk) 10:07, 3 Pebrero 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have another question, this one being about the Brahmaputra River. There are again two articles; one being Brahmaputra River (suba) and Brahmaputra River (distributariyo). These appear to be duplicates, but Brahmaputra River (suba) is linked to en:Old Brahmaputra River, instead of en:Brahmaputra River in Wikidata, suggesting it might not be a duplicate. Also, both articles simply say that the Brahmaputra River is located in Bangladesh, even though the Brahmaputra River is a relatively long river that also goes through India and China. What should I do here? DraconicDark (talk) 01:04, 6 Pebrero 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for noticing this. I expect that many border-crossing rivers will have similar issues, as the bot does not "know" the full course of the river. Distributariyo means river branch, and Old Brahmaputra seems to be a branch of the Brahmaputra - possibly these two should be linked instead, and Brahmaputra River (distributariyo) renamed Old Brahmaputra River? Then Brahmaputra River (suba) can be re-linked to en:Brahmaputra River. In the infobox, parameters country1 and country2 should be added, can be copied from the english infobox. China and India should be added in the first text sentence as well. Lsj (talk) 09:15, 6 Pebrero 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Boroughs of New York City[usba ang wikitext]

The articles about the boroughs of New York City treat the boroughs of New York City as counties (listed: Queens County, New York County, Kings County, Bronx County, Richmond County). This by itself is fine, because, administratively, the boroughs of New York City are equivalent to counties. However, each article about the boroughs as counties lists the neighborhoods within it as if they are separate cities, which isn't the case. To make matters worse, each one has a duplicate that says the borough is the capital of the county, even though they are the same administratively (e.g. calling Brooklyn the capital of Kings County. When merging the duplicates, do I keep the county name or the borough name, and what do I do with the lists the bot generated? DraconicDark (talk) 00:31, 18 Pebrero 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is basically the same kind of issue as with the German cities we discussed before. But these boroughs are primarily administrative units, and Queens or Brooklyn (unlike Kiel) do not really have a separate existence as human settlements, so I agree with you that these should be merged. But I note that the articles about the boroughs and the "county capitals" do not have identical information, so they should be merged with some care. The name of the merged article should probably follow what other language editions do -- Brooklyn rather than Kings county, etc. The lists of natural features should be kept, IMHO. The list of "cities" within each borough remains useful information, but should be re-labelled, or perhaps the "city" list should be merged into the subdivision list. Replacing Tidy with RemexHtml[usba ang wikitext]

Greetings! Since you are running your bot to gradually fix all pages affected by the deletable-table-tag linter category, I wanted to check what you think about replacing Tidy on cebwiki in the 2nd week of March? Or, do you prefer we wait till your bot finishes its job? Thanks. mw:User:SSastry (WMF) 18:46, 4 Marso 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There are still a few hundred thousand lint errors to be fixed, but most of them will be covered in the current bot run. In any case the bulk of the remaining errors do not cause egregious problems when viewed with the parsermigration option: [7]. I'm fine with replacing Tidy whenever convenient. Question about names of geographic features[usba ang wikitext]

Many of the articles about geographic features created by Lsjbot have English names (mostly airports and some rivers) This is fine if English is the native language in the region with the feature, but where it is not, (e.g. with China's Yellow River) should the articles be moved? If they were to be moved, they would be renamed to either their native name or their name in Cebuano.

Also, on an unrelated note, your talk page is getting long. Do you want the messages on it to be archived?

Thanks, DraconicDark (talk) 20:15, 28 Abril 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is a tricky issue. It was discussed at some length on Swedish wikipedia when I was designing the bot algorithms for naming articles. The source that the bot uses (Geonames) typically provides a bunch of alternative names for a place. Some of these names are tagged for language, some are not. One of the names is designated as the primary name, this is sometimes the English name and sometimes the native name. The algorithm I used for the bot is to find a name tagged with the target language, if available, and otherwise use the primary name (transcribed to latin alphabet if needed). The name in the local language will be provided in both text and infobox, in the local script, if tagged in the source with a language spoken in the country. Other alternative names will be given in the infobox if they are in latin script.
Actually translating names would have to be done by hand. Machine translation is not nearly reliable enough, and usage is anyway not consistent for geographical names.
In daily conversation, my experience is that Cebuano speakers typically use the English names for foreign places. Not many foreign places have generally accepted native Cebuano names. Inventing new ones is possible -- like calling Yellow River "Dalag nga suba" or something like that -- but I am not sure this would ease understanding.
In any case, any bulk renaming is a policy issue that the whole community should be engaged in. I will call for comments. Lsj (talk) 10:29, 29 Abril 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am a native speaker of Cebuano. I prefer a three name system. The article will be titled by its native name. Then both the English and Cebuano names must be presented in the article. Josefwintzent Libot (talk) 23:11, 30 Abril 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mount Sage[usba ang wikitext]

Hi :)

I think Mount Sage (bukid, lat 18,40, long -64,66) and Mount Sage (bukid, lat 18,40, long -64,65) are actually the same. GNS (where GeoNames originally imported a lot of data from) does have two entries, one at 18° 24' N, one at 18° 25' N with the same longitude. The second one points to the middle of the sea, so I think it was a mistake. That one has been moved in GeoNames, so now they both point to approximately the same location. Could you have a look and merge them if you agree?

Thanks - Nikki (talk) 12:14, 14 Hunyo 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Also, GeoNames ID 3577415 gives the height as ca. 505 m while 3577416 gives the height as 1716 m... but http://www.bvitourism.co.uk/sage-mountain-national-park says the height is 1716 feet (which is 523 m). - Nikki (talk) 14:24, 14 Hunyo 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I found, through Wikidata, this page here on ceb.wiki; the place it describes doesn't exist, though: there is a municipality called "Lona-Lases" (this one), which is made up of various towns (among them "Lona" and "Lases", two different places, and the latter is the administrative seat), so a single town called "Lona-Lases" doesn't exist. Is it possible to delete the page?

Then the page of the municipality could be moved to Lona-Lases, deleting the disambiguation page which is unnecessary; in this case, since we're here, the same should be made for Segonzano and Valfloriana (which had the same problem of Lona-Lases, but the page of the non-extant administrative seat has already been deleted). Thank you in advance! --Syrio (talk) 10:29, 20 Hulyo 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help in merging Cochrane River (suba sa Saskatchewan) into Cochrane River (suba sa Manitoba). A parallel case where your bot picked up two geonames entries for the same river is Churchill River (suba sa Saskatchewan) which should be merged into Churchill River (suba sa Manitoba). Once again it seems that — for some reason — Saskatchewan has geonames entries for rivers that flow through to other Canadian provinces, and, of course, your wonderful bot :-) cannot distinguish such cases. The Churchill River begins in Alberta, flows through Saskatchewan, and reaches its mouth at Hudson Bay in Manitoba; the English Wikipedia article is at Churchill River (Hudson Bay). Might you be able to sort this one out please too? Two Roderick Lake articles for the same lake[usba ang wikitext]

Hi there! Another situation where there are two articles for the same lake, Roderick Lake, on the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Could you merge the Manitoba article (Roderick Lake (lanaw sa Canada, Manitoba)) into the Saskatchewan article (Roderick Lake (lanaw sa Canada, Saskatchewan))? I've created a new article in English (w:en:Roderick Lake (Manitoba-Saskatchewan)) and linked it to the Wikidata entry (d:Q22457983) that was created by importing the Cebuano and Swedish Saskatchewan entries, so the merge direction of Manitoba into Saskatchewan is my preferred option. The same double-article situation exists at the Swedish Wikipedia (w:sv:Roderick Lake (sjö i Kanada, Manitoba) and w:sv:Roderick Lake (sjö i Kanada, Saskatchewan)). Hi. If you take a look at my edits on this wiki, you will see that there a re two articles for the same place:This has been done on 3 articles. Please delete the community articles (they are the town councils). Many thanks! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 11:14, 11 Oktubre 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I have the same request I had some months ago, but this time about Giovo (kapital sa munisipyo): the capital of Giovo is Verla, a town named "Giovo" doesn't actually exist. Is it possible to delete the page? Thank you, --Syrio (talk) 11:03, 26 Oktubre 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Öar i Nagu (Korpo, Houtskär)[usba ang wikitext]

This question in Swedish is about two things

Hej Lsj,

Timezone of South Korea is KST[usba ang wikitext]

Timezone of South Korea is KST, not JST. But the articles about South Korea that your bot created such as Jeju-do says their timezone is JST. Please check and change them correctly. Thanks. --ㅂㄱㅇ (talk) 09:53, 14 Disyembre 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, bot is working on it. But it is just a name change, JST and KST are both UTC+09. Lsj (talk) 12:43, 14 Disyembre 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The "Bacteria" article[usba ang wikitext]

The article Bacteria is a bot-generated article about the insect genus Bacteria, but is Wikidata linked with the article on the domain Bacteria. This linking is incorrect and should be fixed, but should the existing page be moved? If it is moved, it would go to the title Bacteria (henero). DraconicDark (talk) 21:25, 3 Enero 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for noticing. I have removed the wd link and moved the article. Lsj (talk) 22:32, 3 Enero 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Difference between lungsod and munisipyo ?[usba ang wikitext]

Hello,

What is the difference between:

  1. Boxberg (lungsod sa Alemanya, Baden-Württemberg Region, Regierungsbezirk Stuttgart, lat 49,48, long 9,64) and
  2. Boxberg (munisipyo sa Alemanya, Baden-Württemberg Region, Regierungsbezirk Stuttgart, lat 49,49, long 9,66) ?

Is it like

  1. de:Wertheim (Wertheim) (english: inner city; german Kernstadt or Altgemeinde) = Wertheim (lungsod) ?!
  2. de:Wertheim (english: municipality; german Gemeinde) = Wertheim (munisipyo) ?!

And why is the Lemma of Boxberg so long? compared with Wertheim?

Greets Triplec85 (talk) 12:20, 10 Marso 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Lungsod is a en:Human settlement, a populated place. Munisipiyo is an administrative unit, like english: municipality or german Gemeinde. These are distinct types of entities, even though they geographically nearly coincide in some cases, and some wikis merge their articles. A settlement is defined by "facts on the ground", actual buildings. A municipality is defined by lines on a map in a political decision. Lsj (talk) 12:28, 10 Marso 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Most german articles merge the municipality and the human settlement.
But for the example Wertheim (there are also two articles in german):
  1. de:Wertheim (Wertheim) = Wertheim (lungsod) = wikidata:Q21405656 ... ist the human settlement of the municipality de:Wertheim = Wertheim (munisipyo) ?!
  2. de:Wertheim = Wertheim (munisipyo) = wikidata:Q61912 ... is the municipality. ?!
But you have merged Wertheim (lungsod) (human settlement) with wikidata:Q61912 (municipality) ... was this a mistake ?!
Greets Triplec85 (talk) 12:39, 10 Marso 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the wikidata linking looks like a mistake. Thank you. Lsj (talk) 12:58, 10 Marso 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have written to you because I want to understand what you mean by lungsod and munisipyo. If I understand it, I can at Wikidata make meaningful links with the corresponding German articles or correct possible errors. I often use the tool WikiShootMe. This shows Wikidata items with coordinates. I noticed that starting from the CEB-Wikipedia many Wikidata-items are created, which are close to each other. So I asked myself the question, if lungsod and munisipyo meant the German correspondence Hauptort/Kernstadt and Gemeinde. Triplec85 (talk) 13:29, 10 Marso 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, munisipyo = Gemeinde is correct. Concerning lungsod = Hauptort/Kernstadt, it is basically correct but there are further complications: some lungsods are just secondary villages that are not Hauptort of anything. Also, if the bot "knew" that a lungsod was the Hauptort of a municipality when it wrote the article, it would be called "kapital sa munisipyo" (e.g. Zărnești (kapital sa munisipyo)), which means something like Hauptort Gemeindes. Similar for capitals of larger units. Lsj (talk) 13:38, 10 Marso 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Look at the two pictures, how i understand munisipyo and lungsod (example Wertheim). You agree? Triplec85 (talk) 16:16, 10 Marso 2019 (UTC)[reply]
munisipyo de:Wertheim =Wertheim (munisipyo) =wikidata:Q61912
lungsod de:Wertheim (Wertheim) =Wertheim (lungsod) =wikidata:Q21405656

@Triplec85: About the first point you brought up:

Often, Lsjbot's distinction between munisipyo and lungsod results in the creation of duplicate articles. The bot doesn't realize that in Germany, there is no such thing as "kapital sa munisipyo," and municipality and city are the same thing. Therefore, the example of Boxberg you mentioned is a case of duplicate articles (with unnecessarily long titles!) that should be merged. Sometimes, if a city is subdivided into quarters (like Wertheim), I could see basis for a distinction between munisipyo and lungsod, but usually, such a distinction is unwarranted. In any case, the rampant creation of duplicate articles by Lsjbot causes a massive headache for Wikidata, which is why the subject keeps getting discussed on this wiki. Unfortunately, no progress has been made thus far. DraconicDark (talk) 00:27, 7 Mayo 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@DraconicDark: In my region I use "WikiShootMe!"-tool to regularly compare Wikidata entries with existing articles, files and commons categories. For example WikiShootMe! around Wertheim. There I noticed this problem and I was surprised that so many supposedly double Wikidata entries are triggered by the same bot. Triplec85 (talk) 19:24, 7 Mayo 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In this edition your bot chnged Polonya to Polskowa. But this was working link, and now still Polonya is OK, but Polskowa is dead. Main article should be moved at first. Ciacho5 (talk) 22:03, 8 Mayo 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The bot is in the process of changing the name Polonya to Polskowa in all articles about Poland. The main article will be moved as well, but the whole process takes a few days even at bot speed. Have patience. Lsj (talk) 05:47, 9 Mayo 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicates[usba ang wikitext]

Hello! I am writing you because – as a Wikidata administrator – we find many duplicate pages in this wiki. On Wikidata, we cannot delete or merge duplicate items till we solve site-links problems locally. Kategoriya:Kandidato sa pagtangtang dayon contains these articles. As far as I can see, you are the only active administrator here; could you try to keep it empty and delete the duplicates? Can I help you in this somehow? Thanks for your answer! Regards, Bencemac (talk) 11:37, 2 Hunyo 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As I have stated several times already, here (see above) and elsewhere, I regard human settlements and administrative units as separate entities. They are frequently conflated on Wikidata, but I regard that as an error in Wikidata, that should be corrected on Wikidata. If you wish to spread that error to cebwiki, I will not stop you, but I will also not help you. Anyway, the proper way to do what you want done is not deletion -- it is to merge the two articles, and make one of them a redirect to other. For that, you do not need admin rights on cebwiki. Lsj (talk) 15:47, 2 Hunyo 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you have any other kind of deletion requests, I will be happy to oblige, as with that starfish you pointed out. Lsj (talk) 15:49, 2 Hunyo 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We cannot solve the problem of these duplicates till they are fixed locally (deleting/merging on Wikidata is the last step). I do not speak this language, so I cannot merge them because I would not know what I should keep or not. These duplicates will not fix themselves unless we do something. Regards, Bencemac (talk) 12:42, 8 Hunyo 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will go through Kategoriya:Kandidato sa pagtangtang dayon again and see which articles there are actually duplicates, and not settlement/municipality pairs. Lsj (talk) 20:10, 8 Hunyo 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Done. The remaining ones in the category are all cases where I disagree with the deletion request. Lsj (talk) 10:11, 9 Hunyo 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request for bot maintenance on Great Fish River tubig-saluran[usba ang wikitext]

Good afternoon Lsj! How are you doing?

Will you have some time to do bot-maintenance for me on Eastern Cape rivers in Kategoriya:Great Fish River tubig-saluran? Just small cosmetic changes to the map layout in each article. I started off here, but its too time-consuming!

Please move the South African map up to just below each infobox (and resize to 250px), so its easier to peruse than lower down in article! Thanks so much, --Aliwal2012 (talk) 11:31, 27 Agosto 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, how I can added autocreate interwiki link to wikidata for one page. For example I adding one page, but I need added interwiki links also. Detta är slöseri med tid. Can you came zazaki Wikipedia? We want also autocreate same article. We don't know how we do it Xorasan (talk) 13:49, 10 Nobiyembre 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning how to add interwiki links, see here: [8].
Concerning Zazaki wikipedia, it would be possible to auto-create articles there, under some conditions:
  • Is there solid consensus in the Zazaki community behind an auto-create project?
  • Is there a group of native Zazaki speakers who are willing to put in the sustained effort to translate all the key vocabulary items needed for the auto-create, and to check the articles when they are created.
Lsj (talk) 16:45, 10 Nobiyembre 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Zazaki language ready for everything. we haven't bureaucrat only. We have some administrator, they don't understand page creating. I use some code but not enough for me. I wanna learn everythings. I create 40-50 article per daily, but I don't wanna lose time. For your all questions, my answer; Yes We are ready. Xorasan (talk) 12:50, 11 Nobiyembre 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Are you interested in the auto-creation of articles about geography, or animal and plant species, or both? In either case, I have a bunch of files that need translating into Zazaki. Do you have an e-mail address to which I can send them? You will also need to import a few templates into Zazaki-wikipedia, notably Taxobox and Geobox, if you don't have them already, and translate whatever needs translating in these templates. Lsj (talk) 17:10, 12 Nobiyembre 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Geography, people many many more... You can check-in zazaki Wikipedia and you can look templates. My templates automatics. We need only autocreate article and interwiki link to wikidata. You can send Xorasan@mail.com.tr Xorasan (talk) 11:20, 13 Nobiyembre 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not now for species. Zazaki wiki work with Wikidata. All templates work like this. If you want create you can look User:Xorasan/Species. But if we create all plants, we need so much Latin words. If you want create NGC object you can look User:Xorasan/NGC. And simple form for geography article also User:Xorasan/Geography. Xorasan (talk) 08:15, 14 Nobiyembre 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Articles of Lsj-Bot[usba ang wikitext]

Hello Lsj,

in the German Wikipedia there are currently Disuccsions about your bot and the data quality in the German Kurier. [9]. I think what you are adding with your bot is not helpful. For example about villages it sometimes helped me. But if there are little streams, hills or other things geographic objects then there are not enough sources. I think you should review the sources if they are enough detailled and trustable before adding. You should start a project to check the quality of your bot created articles and systematicly look if for example the coordinates are detailled enough. In German Wikipedia they started with doing this for some areas. I suggest to create a WikiProject in Wikidata and then there is a list of queries to check the coordinates and maybe a collection of other sources so that the items can be improved. I see that what you have done as something what was wrong from the order how to do it but maybe it helps now to make the data better.--Hogü-456 (talk) 19:50, 8 Hunyo 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your stupid bot is creating tens of thousands of duplicates. It's making cebwiki a laughingstock. This doesn't help anybody.

Hello! I have found the page Stazione di Lavis on wikidata; "stazione di Lavis" means literally "Lavis' [train] station", it's not a settlement; the page should be removed. --Syrio (talk) 11:47, 21 Hulyo 2020 (UTC)[reply]

At the coordinates in the article, Google Maps does show an apparent settlement called "Stazione di Lavis". The nearby train station is called Lavis-Stazione Fs. Lsj (talk) 18:47, 21 Hulyo 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Google Maps seems to have taken the information from some database, which was wrong. That place is part of the town of Lavis - as I said, "stazione di Lavis" means "Lavis' station", it's not a separate settlement. That's not really a proof, but if you check the address of any of the companies there you'll see it only says "38015 Lavis TN", as opposed to companies in other hamlets inside the municipality of Lavis where the name of the settlement is specified (such as the nearby Pressano). --Syrio (talk) 21:03, 21 Hulyo 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Munisipyo, lungsod and komyun ?[usba ang wikitext]

Hi,

I'm working on Wikidata items for places in France. I think I understood that: "munisipyo" is the commune and "lungsod" is the city/town/populated place, is it right? And if so, I'm a bit lost when there is 3 articles munisipyo, lungsod and komyun? (for instance Saint-Quay-Portrieux (lungsod), Saint-Quay-Portrieux (munisipyo), Saint-Quay-Portrieux) In that case, should munisipyo and komyun be merged? I came here because I saw that Dinard (lungsod) redirect to Dinard, but I thought it should be Dinard (munisipyo) who redirect to Dinard, no?

Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 12:48, 28 Hulyo 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, "munisipyo" is the commune and "lungsod" is the city/town/populated place, in all countries with commune-like administrative units. But in France, many commune articles were created before my bot run, in a format that the bot failed to detect as duplicates (as in Saint-Q-P), or incorrectly identified as duplicates of the "lungsod" article (thus the incorrect Dinard redirect). These older articles are called "komyun". In most cases, the munisipyo article should be merged into (and redirected to) the komyun article. Lsj (talk) 13:50, 28 Hulyo 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick answer. Ok, that's what I thought, I inversed the redirect for Dinard and turned Saint-Quay-Portrieux (munisipyo) into a redirect to Saint-Quay-Portrieux. I'll check if there other triple of articles like that (maybe you have an idea to filter them? going through the list of all articles ending in " (munisipyo)" by hand would be a bit tidious https://grep.toolforge.org/index.php?lang=ceb&project=wikipedia&namespace=0&pattern=+%5C%28munisipyo%5C%29%24 ; I also made this query https://w.wiki/Y8N but this one is probably too narrow and with some false-positive). Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 15:06, 28 Hulyo 2020 (UTC)[reply]
All the bot-created munisipyos of France should be in the category Kategoriya:Mga subdibisyon sa Pransiya (and similarly for other countries). All the bot-created lungsods will be in Kategoriya:Mga lungsod sa Pransiya. I believe all the old komyun-articles are in subcategories of Kategoriya:Mga komyun sa Pransiya. Might that help in formulating appropriate queries? Lsj (talk) 15:59, 28 Hulyo 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Similar situation here: https://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galbiate There is just one community "Galbiate", it doesn't have a capital, it's just the one thing. Can you please merge these pages and their according wikidata items? Also, I pinged you a while ago about this Interwiki conflict: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Wikidata:Interwiki_conflicts/Unresolved/2020&diff=1247600965&oldid=1247523919#%C5%81%C4%85cko_(Q33731215)/%C5%81%C4%85cko_(Q8081149)
I am confident that you did all this in good faith, but I have to agree to the many others here that your bot created a lot of unuseful objects, and because everything is linked to Wikidata, this does not only spoil the Cebuano Wikipedia, but also all other Wikipedias. -- H005 (talk) 18:14, 5 Septiyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That's weird. I will check what happened and fix them. Thank you for letting me know. Lsj (talk) 06:05, 15 Septiyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

hi I have a question how many articles with your bot in future Amirh123 (talk) 18:48, 11 Oktubre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Not clear. I'm currently updating the biology articles with new taxonomic information, and that will result in some modest number of new articles. That will take a year or so. After that we will see what happens. Lsj (talk) 22:26, 11 Oktubre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Another question, I notice that Selenaspidus articulatus has 171 citations. Don't you think this is a bit excessive for such a brief stub? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:38, 23 Oktubre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Translation request[usba ang wikitext]

Hello Lsj, Would you like to write / translate the article of Isabelle de Charrière (Q123396) for the Cebuano Wikipedia? That would be appreciated. Boss-well63 (talk) 12:09, 1 Nobiyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I come to you again for the usual reason. The municipality of Nago-Torbole (munisipyo) is made up of two main villages, Nago (wikidata:Q23920061) and Torbole (wikidata:Q23912980); the latter is the municipal seat. A single town named Nago-Torbole doesn't actually exist, so Nago-Torbole (kapital sa munisipyo) should be deleted (Nago-Torbole is also useless at this point). Thanks, --Syrio (talk) 18:01, 8 Nobiyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lsjbot and adding images[usba ang wikitext]

Greetings,

The Structured Data team at the Wikimedia Foundation is exploring building a media-matching API that would be able to suggest images for articles with a high degree of accuracy. Are you interested in trying out such an API with Lsjbot in order to add media to new article stubs? I'll have a Phabricator task with more specific information to share in the coming days if it's something you'd like to look in to. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:03, 9 Nobiyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this sounds very interesting. I have been adding images to articles already using Lsjbot, with a home-made algorithm based on images used in iw-linked articles. An API to a better algorithm would be most welcome. Lsj (talk) 20:28, 9 Nobiyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Here's the Phabricator task for discussion and tracking: T267674. Thanks for being open to the idea. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:51, 10 Nobiyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sincere apologies[usba ang wikitext]

Hello, I see that you're the user behind the bot that's helping keep this project afloat. It should've been obvious to me, but it hadn't crossed my mind that actual people could be behind lines of code. I must apologize, then, for the strong feelings I had expressed while making those manual corrections. Almost all of them had been category-deletion requests, and I won't make any more changes of the sort. Please feel free to revert those deletion requests en masse. (I also apologize for all that extra work.)

I understand that you don't speak the language natively. Thank you, however, for the level of commitment you've devoted for a project such as this one. I had also been an administrator here once who, in the end, couldn't devote as much. Please carry on with the work that you do. Ultimately, yes, it's the L1 and advanced L2 speakers who have to do the editing, but you've been preparing the groundwork. --Pare Mo (talk) 13:12, 29 Nobiyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for this apology. You are not the first to treat bot work as inhuman and not requiring etiquette -- but you are the first to apologize for the error. Much appreciated!
I see you have already reverted (all?) the deletion requests you made. But what was it that prompted you to request category deletion in the first place? Cebuano is indeed not my native language, and I may certainly make mistakes, for which I apologize. I would appreciate if you tell me what was wrong, so I can fix it. If there is some systematic mistake recurring in many bot-created categories, it should be easy enough to write some more lines of bot code to correct the error. As you say, L1 speakers need to control what is written on cebwp -- but very few L1 speakers are actually active, so I'm doing the best I can on my own. Lsj (talk) 15:38, 29 Nobiyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Here I am again with the same kind of request. The capital of the municipality of Vallarsa (munisipyo) is the town of Raossi. An town by the name of "Vallarsa" doesn't actually exist, so Vallarsa (kapital sa munisipyo) should be deleted (and Vallarsa becomes useless too, I'd say). Thanks, --Syrio (talk) 19:40, 1 Disyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Sorry, the same goes also for

Hence Trambileno, Terragnolo, Fierozzo, Commezzadura and Rumo can be deleted too, and also Segonzano and Valfloriana that were left behind from other times. After this, I'll probably not disturb you for a while :D --Syrio (talk) 20:19, 2 Disyembre 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Structured data across Wikimedia is starting![usba ang wikitext]

Hello there, Lsj! I am writing to you because a new WMF project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW), is about to start.

SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet.

The reason why I am contacting you is because of your involvement with the creation of new articles on a large scale, and your opinion would be of great interest for us to kickstart the discussion. We defined a series of questions we would like to have feedback on. If you want to ask a question on your own, or just want to share with us your ideas or opinions, please feel free to do so!

Also, if you know some other user(s) that can be interested, please let me know or invite them to join the discussion. The more, the better!

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk) 18:06, 19 Marso 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of duplication on ceb.wiki and wikidata[usba ang wikitext]

Hi, I noticed that your bot duplicated articles for the same city like Sant Joan Despí (lungsod) and Sant Joan Despí (munisipyo) or Talavera de la Reina (munisipyo) and Talavera de la Reina (kapital sa munisipyo). Please, correct those errors, it looks like there are dozens. Also I noticed them, by chance, in some tiny villages in Eastern Europe like Gorica (lungsod sa Montenegro, lat 42,56, long 19,13) and Gorica (lungsod sa Montenegro, lat 42,29, long 18,80). --KajenCAT (talk) 23:27, 14 Mayo 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Now I see I'm not the first about munisipyo/lungsod/kapital sa munisipyo complaining. Are there any consensus in wikidata to create differents items for munisipyo when coincides with human settlement? Are there any criteria to decide what is human settlement? --KajenCAT (talk) 23:39, 14 Mayo 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There is no consensus one way or the other on this issue. Wikidata is not consistent. E.g. Stockholm has separate entries for the settlement and the municipality, but many other cities don't. When creating articles on cebwp, I followed the source I was using, which did distinguish settlements from municipalities. To me it makes more sense to keep them separate, as they are distinct types of entities -- a bunch of houses on the ground versus administrative lines on a map. Lsj (talk) 00:01, 15 Mayo 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think, we are not gonna to agree, but it doesn't matter. Could you check abouth the Montenegro village; Gorica (lungsod sa Montenegro, lat 42,56, long 19,13) and Gorica (lungsod sa Montenegro, lat 42,29, long 18,80)? It seems an error. --KajenCAT (talk) 00:27, 19 Mayo 2021 (UTC)[reply]
One of the Goricas appears to be a genuine village, the other not (empty field on Google Maps). I have deleted the non-existent one. Lsj (talk) 06:50, 19 Mayo 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bot for Norfuk Wikipedia please?[usba ang wikitext]

Hi, I would just like to ask, could you get Lsjbot onto the Norfuk Wikipedia. It is running low on articles (about 800 exist). If you do this, could you make it in a non-controversial way (i.e still have most articles human-made). Norfuk or Pitkern-Norfuk is a language spoken in Norfolk Island and on the Pitcairn Islands. A Norfuk translator is available here; [10] Thanks.

101.191.12.183 09:04, 16 Hulyo 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning Norfuk wikipedia, it would be possible to use Lsjbot to auto-create articles there, under two conditions:
  • Is there solid consensus in the Norfuk community behind an Lsjbot project?
  • Is there a group of native Norfuk speakers who are willing to put in the sustained effort to translate all the key vocabulary items needed for the auto-create, and to check the articles when they are created?
Lsj (talk) 10:38, 16 Hulyo 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There would be speakers willing to help (the number may not be large but the translator is pretty accurate and I can fix up any errors with translation). The translator has over 1,000 translation rules too. I don't expect Lsjbot to flood the Norfuk Wikipedia (my main intention was to get over 1,000 articles in Norfuk). I don't think bots are a bad thing honestly (if a wiki is 100% bots then that may be a problem) but there is a Norfuk community on Wikipedia that is large considering the language itself isn't large. As a side note, if a place name doesn't exist on the translator, create a phonetic borrowing from English (because Norfuk is a creole language based off 18th century English and a bit of Tahitian). This has been done many times and is recognised by the Norfolk Islander community (e.g Norfuk adopted the word "compyuuta", which translates to "computer"). Phonetic borrowings do exist a lot on the Norfuk Wikipedia (mainly from Australian and New Zealand English). Another important thing is that the letters q, v, x and z do not exist in Norfuk. The letter q is usually replaced by the letters kw (but not in words like "queue"), the letter v is usually replaced by a w, the letter x is usually formatted as an eks (but not in words like "xylophone") and the letter z is often replaced by an s. Ph is often replaced by an f too. For more information about the Norfuk alphabet, see this website. Thanks. 101.191.12.183 02:30, 17 Hulyo 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Translation request[usba ang wikitext]

Hello.

Is there a translation request page in Cebuano Wikipedia? I would like the articles en:Flag of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, en:Emblem of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic and en:Anthem of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic to be translated and uploaded in Cebuano Wikipedia. They don't need to be long. If such a page exists, can you inform me, so I can send them?

I requested this to you as a user, because I don't want these articles created by a bot sometime in the future, but by a human. The bots don't always translate well, and alas have gone out of control in Waray Wikipedia, and the same thing is happening to articles about populated places in Swedish Wikipedia.

Yours sincerely, Multituberculata (talk) 18:54, 19 Hulyo 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lsj, Some people noticed on the Wikipedia Discord that User:Wikipedsaur (Special:Contribs/Wikipedsaur) has been adding large amounts of seemingly unrelated images to pages. As you are the admin with the most recent contribution I'm bringing this to you, as I cannot find a local community page at a glance. Asartea (talk) 11:28, 16 Agosto 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at some of the user's early edits some time ago, and they were generally ok. But looking at the current batch, the majority are spurious. There are still some good ones in the sample I looked at, but probably easier if I just mass-revert everything. I don't have the time to sift through thousands of edits by hand. I will also warn the user, and block if the bad edits persist. BTW, there is a local community page (Wikipedia:Tubaan) but it is not very active. Lsj (talk) 11:52, 16 Agosto 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Italicization of species names[usba ang wikitext]

Hello, I woulf like to first briefly thank you for making Cebuano Wikipedia as a whole afloat. But to get to the point, I noticed that the titles of species names, as well as inside infoboxes are not italicized when they are generated by Lsjbot, as they should be. Is there something that could be done to italicized them by the bot? Thanks.

Thank you for noticing. This is a mistake that should be fixed. But it will take considerable time to fix it even with a bot, seems the error is present in very many articles. Lsj (talk) 21:33, 14 Septiyembre 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed the bot code now so that future articles will be correct. But the backlog will take a year or two. Lsj (talk) 19:06, 17 Septiyembre 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[usba ang wikitext]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hi Lsj, how are you? Long time no correspondence between us!

I need your bot to do an edit on (most) South African river articles. The Location map's label position is set by default to "right", which throws most labels of the map/page. If you can make it "left" (or even blanked out) it will solve the problem.

An example is Boweni, and one that I changed is Predikantstroom. May I suggest you start with provinces on the eastern side of SA:

Feel free to delete these pages. Lsj (talk) 04:48, 9 Agosto 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My talkpage[usba ang wikitext]

Hi, could you delete my talkpage? Thanks Wildernesswalker (talk) 22:13, 1 Septiyembre 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You don't provide a rationale, and the page has comments by other users, so I doubt your request will be completed. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 20:39, 2 Septiyembre 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bot on Kashmiri Wikipedia[usba ang wikitext]

Hello, Can we use your bot to create Geographic topics on Kashmiri Wikipedia. Keeping in view that they have almost same content. Can we give it a try for 100 articles. 511KeV (talk) 16:22, 3 Disyembre 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can I create an Article about Baita Huli on en.wikipedia[usba ang wikitext]

Hello,

I'm an English Wikipedia contributer. I discovered the article Baita Huli was written by you, I'm appreciated. Thank You for recognising this place and mountain.

I am native to this place and I want to write an article about this mountain in details on en.wikipedia. Please, will you permit me? to do this? or should I use the translated version of this article? anyways.. it's upto you. Kindly leave a message on my talk page, if you permit me to do this. Thank You. Perfectodefecto (Talk) 21:57, 21 Disyembre 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Non-existing towns[usba ang wikitext]

Hi, sorry to bother you but there are several of "kapital sa munisipyo" that I found that don't actually exists, and they need to be deleted here before I can cleanup on wikidata. I'll leave here the list, if you can please deal with them:

By deleting them some disambiguation pages should become superfluos too: Bleggio Superiore, Commezzadura, Fierozzo, Rumo, Terragnolo, Trambileno, Vermiglio, Brenzone, Sovramonte, Gosaldo, Sant'Orsola Terme, and also Valfloriana and Segonzano. Thanks in advance! Syrio (talk) 19:03, 12 Mayo 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Remove page[usba ang wikitext]

Calne (distrito) was created by the LSJ bot, however it does not exist as an entity and needs removing. The normal town page Calne (lungsod) is almost correct although it could do with being moved to 'Calne' to remove the city reference, and the disambiguation page overwritten.

Thanks, regards The Equalizer (talk) 00:36, 10 Enero 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Something I've noticed[usba ang wikitext]

A large number of articles created by your bot have this at the bottom:

Cite error: <ref> tags exist for a group named "lower-alpha", but no corresponding <references group="lower-alpha"/> tag was found Kk.urban (talk) 19:09, 25 Pebrero 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. This happend because an underlying template had been modified by someone in a way that was not compatible with the way the bot articles used it. I have now reverted the template. Lsj (talk) 21:39, 25 Pebrero 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rivers to merge[usba ang wikitext]

I read on your talk page that there were duplicate articles about rivers. I found some more:
